The Journey Behind AUDIOENCE

From vision to reality - the story of creating a global music platform

🌱

The Beginning

In the earliest days, it's all about the basics. You work on the bare essentials: nickname-based logins, public chat rooms tied to cities, and the real-time P2P audio streaming functionality. At first, the audio streaming is finicky, with occasional glitches and delays, but you tackle each problem systematically.

🎯

The Vision

You keep the interface simple and intuitive. A clean world map with clickable cities emerges as the backbone of AUDIOENCE.

👥

Early Users

When the beta version goes live, the feedback pours in. Musicians love the concept of connecting globally, but they point out practical issues. The chat rooms feel cluttered, city name variations split the user base.

🔧

Technical Challenges

The next hurdle is scalability. As more users join, the servers struggle during peak times. You spend long nights optimizing server performance, implementing load-balancing solutions. It's grueling, but each small improvement makes AUDIOENCE more stable and reliable.

🎵

Success Stories

A producer in Japan finds a vocalist in the UK, leading to a song with thousands of streams.

Small Touches

You focus on details that make the platform personal: emoji support for better expression, activity indicators showing vibrant spaces, and pinned messages for organizing collaborations.

🚀

The Future

AUDIOENCE evolves into more than just a plugin—it becomes a movement. Schools use it for remote lessons, artists showcase at global platforms, and you're able to give back to the community. It's not just a project anymore—it's a legacy connecting musicians worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about AUDIOENCE

General Questions

Q: What is AUDIOENCE exactly?

A: AUDIOENCE is a VST3/AU/AAX plugin that enables real-time audio collaboration between musicians worldwide. It combines global messaging with high-quality peer-to-peer audio streaming for professional music collaboration.

Q: Do I need an internet connection?

A: Yes, AUDIOENCE requires a stable internet connection for all features. We recommend at least 5+ Mbps for optimal P2P audio streaming quality.

Q: Is AUDIOENCE compatible with my language?

A: Yes! AUDIOENCE is compatible with any language and any alphabet. The interface supports international character sets and can be used worldwide.

Q: How many people can join a private room?

A: Currently in beta, private rooms support a maximum of 2 users (creator and member). This limitation will be expanded in future releases.

Technical Questions

Q: Why can't I hear audio in private rooms?

A: Make sure your DAW transport is playing. AUDIOENCE buffers incoming audio until you start playback to ensure no audio is lost. Also check your P2P connection status in the Audio Stream Info panel.

Q: What's the difference between OPUS and PCM modes?

A: OPUS mode provides high-quality compressed audio (256kbps) with efficient bandwidth usage. PCM mode offers uncompressed audio 32-bit with ultra-low latency but requires more bandwidth (~1.4Mbps).

Q: How do I route audio and MIDI to AUDIOENCE?

A: Use standard DAW routing - treat AUDIOENCE like any synthesizer. Route audio/MIDI TO the track where AUDIOENCE is placed, and audio/MIDI comes OUT of that track naturally.

Q: Should I use Real-time mode (10ms) or Normal mode (500ms)?

A: Use Normal mode (500ms) for stable production sessions. Real-time mode (10ms) is for immediate response testing and jamming sessions but can cause audio dropouts and isn't ideal for production work.

Q: I'm having trouble connecting to other users. What router settings should I check?

A: AUDIOENCE uses P2P (peer-to-peer) connections for optimal audio quality. Since we don't use external servers yet (due to unsustainable costs), proper router configuration is essential for P2P connections.

Router Configuration Steps:

  1. Access Router Settings: Open your web browser and navigate to your router's IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
  2. Login: Enter your router's username and password
  3. Find NAT/Firewall Settings: Look for sections labeled "NAT," "Firewall," or "Advanced Settings"
  4. Enable Full Cone NAT: If available, enable "Full Cone NAT" option
  5. Alternative Options:
    • DMZ: Enable DMZ for your computer's IP address (opens all ports)
    • UPnP: Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) for automatic port mapping
    • Port Forwarding: Configure specific ports if needed for your applications
  6. Save & Restart: Save changes and restart your router

⚠️ Security Note: Enabling DMZ or Full Cone NAT can increase security risks. Consider using UPnP first as a safer alternative.

Router Compatibility: Not all routers support Full Cone NAT. Check your router's documentation for specific instructions.

Q: Download preview doesn't work in private rooms - how can I fix this?

A: If download preview isn't working in private rooms, this is typically a folder access permission issue with your DAW. Here's how to fix it:

For Ableton Live Users:

  1. Check Privacy Preferences: Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab
  2. Find Ableton Live: Look for Ableton Live in the "Files and Folders" or "Full Disk Access" sections
  3. Enable Download Folder Access: If Ableton Live is not listed or doesn't have access to your Downloads folder, click the "+" button and add Ableton Live
  4. Grant Full Disk Access: If the issue persists, grant Ableton Live "Full Disk Access" in the Privacy preferences
  5. Restart Ableton: Close and restart Ableton Live for the changes to take effect

Alternative Solution: Try changing your default download location to a folder that your DAW already has access to, such as your Documents or Music folder.

Windows Users: Ensure your DAW is running with proper administrator privileges and check Windows Defender permissions for folder access.

Features & Usage

Q: Can I share any type of file?

A: In private rooms, yes - you can share any file type securely. In public rooms and country messages, only MIDI and audio files are allowed for safety reasons.

Q: How do I set up Ableton Link synchronization?

A: Enable Link in the Sync section of the Audio Stream Info panel. Make sure your DAW and other applications also have Link enabled. AUDIOENCE will automatically sync tempo, transport, and timing.

Q: Can I use custom avatar images?

A: Yes! Upload custom avatar images to personalize your profile. AUDIOENCE supports common image formats (PNG, JPG, GIF) with automatic optimization.

Q: Can I use mobile hotspot with AUDIOENCE?

A: Yes, Android hotspots work perfectly with AUDIOENCE for all features including P2P streaming and MIDI. However, iPhone hotspots have limitations - while messaging and file sharing work, P2P real-time audio streaming and MIDI may not function properly due to iOS network restrictions.

Beta & Community

Q: This is a beta version - what does that mean?

A: AUDIOENCE is currently in beta testing. Features and capabilities are being actively developed and improved based on user feedback. Some limitations (like 2-user private rooms) will be expanded in future releases.

Q: What about my data privacy and message storage?

A: AUDIOENCE respects your privacy. We do not collect personal data beyond what's necessary for functionality. All messages are automatically deleted after 24 hours - nothing is stored permanently on our servers. Your conversations remain private and temporary.

Q: Can I share AUDIOENCE with others?

A: Absolutely! Please share AUDIOENCE with your friends, bandmates, and fellow musicians. The more users join our global community, the better the collaborative experience becomes for everyone.

Q: How can I support the AUDIOENCE project?

A: You can support AUDIOENCE development through VSTOPIA's support page. Community support helps us improve server infrastructure, add new features, and expand capabilities for larger group sessions.
